Reviewing Legend in My Time ~ Ann Pascoe
"KopeKope no hope, KopeKope no hope, KopeKope no hope...Dance, dance the night away.."
When you hear this opening song on Dennis Marsh's latest album, "Legend In My Time", you'll be hooked and the Maori chant added to this song will get you, even more so than the UK Soccer Stadium "Hey Baby, Oooh Ah!"
Just when Dennis thought after his 20th album was a time to take it easy, he comes up with what I think are the best song selections on any one of his albums.
The selection covers all kinds of moods and emotions. From the poignant "Girl From Yesterday" and the old Cindy Walker/Eddie Arnold "You Don't
Know Me" tracks, to the fun with Adam Brand's
"Uncle Pete", about the little 'boy truckie' complete with driving sounds, and the story behind
"Grandpa's Piano" and Mike McCarthy's admirable enthusiasm on the piano in this one is evident.
"It Keeps Right on a Hurtin'" by Johnny Tillotson is an old familiar favourite given more piano treatment. And even Elvis gets a reminder in this album with "All Shook Up" that Dennis Marsh can shake it up as well.
The title track "Legend in My Own Time" is a sumptuous musical arrangement full of piano and strings and Dennis doing full harmony vocals himself as he does for all the album except "The Girl From Yesterday" when Rob Thompson-Brown helps out.
Using two of New Zealand's Neil Hersey's originals, "Cowboys and Angels" and the beautiful "Why Do
Tears" gives the album originality, but two country
songs that will quickly become familiar thanks to Dennis's choice, and smooth handling of these songs.
As usual, the album presentation cover is attractive, handled by Rajon Music NZ, and inside, Dennis comments on how he came to make his song choices which makes interesting reading.
And of course, all musicians are listed on this album as well, including guitarists Chet O'Connell, and Dave Maybee.
"Legend In My Time" is once again arranged and produced by Mike McCarthy and Dennis Marsh, recorded and mixed and mastered at Manuka Studios Auckland.
